Best Things to know about Cement board

Cement board is formed by combining cement with reinforcing fibers. The typical composition of cement board is cement at 60 to 70% by weight, 15 to 20% of filler, almost 10% of fiber such as cellulose fiber and almost 10% of mica. It is almost two times lighter than Gypsum Board

Various patents have been registered about the composition of cement board by varying the proportion in the composition. For example, different materials such as lime, gypsum can be used as a filler material. Their proportion can be varied. Similarly, cenosphere is used for giving the cement board resistance to alkali but it’s use in higher proportion makes the cement material durable. For your information, cenosphere is a material composed of silica and alumina which is obtained in thermal power plants as a byproduct of coal burning.

Types of Cement board

Cement boards are of four types. They are cement bonded particle board and fiber cement board, cement SIP Panels and Wood wool cement board.

Cement bonded particle Board

The cement bonded particle board uses wood flakes as reinforcing material. Cement binds wood flakes as a binder to make a cement board.  They possess an excellent quality of thermal lags. Some cement bonded particle board are also designed. It has higher load bearing capacities than that of fiber cement board. As cement board have higher load bearing capacities,

Fiber Cement Board

Cellulose fiber obtained from wood is used as a reinforcing material in fiber cement board. Polymers are also added with cellulose fiber in order to increase the water resistant property of fiber cement board. Fiber board is made in low thickness because it is more used for aesthetics.

Cement SIP Panels

Cement SIP panels are unique cement board in which polystyrene foam is inserted in between cement fiber board so as to increase the insulating properties. The durability of these panels are higher than both cement bonded particle board and fiber cement board. They are also superior in resisting fire and rot. They also have increased moisture resistance. Cement SIP Panels are also good enough for constructing load-bearing structures.

Wood wool cement boards

As the name suggests, this kind of cement board is formed by mixing the wood wool with cement. The primary properties of wood wool cement boards are their excellent sound absorption properties and its good fire resistance. This is also an environmental friendly product. It is also resistant against rots given by termites and has good insulating properties.

Types of Fibers used in Cement Board

Various materials are used as a fiber in cement board. Cement bonded particle board used wood flakes as a fiber material whereas cellulose is mostly used as a fiber material in fiber cement board.

Advantages of Cement Board

The major advantage of cement board is its resistance to moisture unlike most other paper coated or paper-based prefabricated boards. Though cement board is not waterproof, it dries easily. Waterproof coating can be applied on cement board in case cement board is the outermost finishing layer to avoid the problem of moisture. Cement board bonds most easily with tiles, thereby making it popular in low-cost finishing.

Disadvantages of Cement board

It can be said that cement board has more weight than any other light weight boards or panels. That’s why it is difficult to construct. Handling of cement board by one person is not possible. The hole for the fasteners must be drilled beforehand and fasteners should be tightened afterwards. Saw blades or carbide tip blades should be used for cutting cement board.

Size and Application of Cement board

Apart from types, the size and application of cement board also differs by thickness. Large thickness cement boards are used in places where large load is applied and small thickness cement board is utilized more for aesthetic purposes

Hocre board summarizes the size and application of cement board in the table below.

3.5 to 6mm         Interior ceiling and facing panel of sandwich board

8 to 15mm          Interior partition

8 to 12mm          External siding, cladding or facade

18 to 22mm        Furniture desk

18 to 33mm        Indoor Floor Decking

22 to 30mm        Indoor Stair
