Introduction

The Sapt Koshi Barrage is sluice across the Koshi river that carries vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic between Sapatari and Sunsari districts of Nepal. It is near India. In 1958-1962 it was built and it has 58 gates. It is 1150 mt. long and 10 mt. wide. It was constructed after the Koshi Agreement. In India, it is called BIHAR KO DUKHA (Sorrow of Bihar). 

Facts of the Koshi Barrage 

The Koshi is also known as the SORROW OF BIHAR. The river crosses into north Bihar. The annual floods affect about 21000 sq.km of fertile lands thereby disturbing the rural economy. The Koshi agreement was signed on 25 April 1954.

At Saptakoshi Barrage construction time it was one the South Asia’s biggest river project,

It was inaugurated by the King of Nepal and PM of India on 30 April 1959, At the inaugurated time more than thousands of people were present at Bhimnagar,

More than one million people were involved at the Koshi Barrage construction site,

There are two different agreements of Koshi - Koshi Agreement was first made on 25 April 1954 and another agreement was made on 19 December 1966.

Barrage has no exact date of expiration,

The Koshi is a transboundary river which flows through Tibet, Nepal, and India,

World's highest upland, it then drains a large part of Nepal before emerging onto the Gangetic plains, 

Three major tributaries, the Sun Koshi, Arun and Tamor,

The Koshi carries the maximum amount of slit after the Brahmaputra in India.
