Are you building your own home? Home building in Nepal is often a result of people working hard for many years in foreign country. And people take loans for building houses. Or, you might be seeking for cheaper options now with provision for future extension and beautification of your home.

Here, we explain you about paints so that you understand the quality and types of paints with different prices and plan to use them according to your customized requirement.

Oil paints

Oil paint is primarily applied in wooden and metallic surfaces like doors, windows and metals like iron and steel. The oil used in oil paints is made up of linseed. It is sometimes used in walls too. This paint can be used as primer coat, finish coat or underarm coat. Oil paint gives high finish and gloss. The paint is also washable and durable too. Only disadvantage with this paint is it takes 24 hours to dry. Substances like varnish, turpentine and spirit can be added to oil paints in order to decrease viscosity and make it workable.

Distemper Paint

Distemper paint is a paint made up of water, chalk, lime, pigments and glue. Distemper paint typically lasts for 3 to 5 years. It can be applied without any primer. Two coats of distemper painting are usually required. They have smell and they don’t crack in sunlight. But it’s disadvantage is that it peels off when wet. Therefore, it cannot be used in exterior walls. It cannot therefore be considered as a too good paint.

Cement Paint

If you are looking for an economical option in painting, cement paint is the best one. Cement paint is available in Nepalese market. Cement paint is basically normal cement with additional color pigments. But it is available in only a few color pigments. If you are thinking of applying a good paint after two years, you can apply cement paint for now and apply another kind of painting after two years. After application of cement paint, you must do curing for a few days. In industrial buildings, cement paint is ideal because it has to face fluctuating weather conditions.

Emulsion Paint

Emulsion paint is the choice of many because of its various advantages. First, Emulsion paint doesn’t give odour. It is non-toxic, so it’s friendly for your children. Emulsion paint has qualities such as being washable with water, alkali resistant, weather resistant, good texture and retains color for a longer time. It also offers good texture and is resistant to fungi and bacteria for a high degree.

Enamel Paint

Enamel paint gives glossy surface and is long-lasting surface too. Enamel is resistant to water and stains too. It is mostly oil based. It dries slowly, but it is durable as compared to other paints. It is mostly used in metals and wooden surfaces. It is sometimes used in walls, but it is very expensive and not preferred by many of our clients.

Whitewash paint

Whitewash paint is made by adding more water to water-based paints. Whitewash paint is used for preserving the original color and texture of the surface while giving it a paint. It is mostly used for painting porous surfaces like brick walls and wooden cabinets.

Acrylic Emulsion Paint

It is a mixture of acrylic polymer and water. They normally don’t mix, so they are mixed by agents called chemical emulsifiers. Acrylic Emulsion is different from normal Emulsion paint in that it gives the surface an improved washability, improved resistance to abrasion and algae or fungi. Acrylic emulsion is also more expensive as compared to Emulsion paint and also the most expensive among above paints because it is dense and gives excellent finishes.

Bituminous Paint

Though bituminous paints are not useful for getting aesthetic finishing, it is still useful for coating many surfaces. Bituminous paint is useful for creating waterproof surface and creating rust less surface. It has to be applied where fire and sunlight is not near. Its common use involves painting in pipes, metals and surfaces prone to seepage.

Synthetic Rubber Paint

Synthetic Rubber paint is mostly used in public infrastructure. It resists chemical attacks very well and is also resistant to sunlight and extreme weather. The traffic signs which you see on both asphalt and concrete roads is also made from synthetic rubber paint. It is also used in concrete ground and floors. Its consistency is good and dries very quickly. It is the most long-lasting among all pigmented paints. It is cheaper than many other paints.
