Waterproofing solutions & waterproofing services in Nepal

A building may be a house, office, or service building is an important asset involving large investment. Water is the most destructive weathering element of these structures; water continues to damage or completely destroy more buildings and structures than natural disasters.

It is very costly to repair if a building structure is damaged by water. The roof/Terrace is the most crucial part of a building from a water leakage point of view and assumes.

In the case of large plan terraces of buildings, it is exposed to direct climatic variations, extremes of rainfall, and structural movements caused thereby and every effort should be taken at the design stage, to ensure that a proper protection system has been incorporated. So, home waterproofing is important in Nepal.

What is Waterproofing?

Waterproofing is the formation of an internal or external membrane that is designed to prevent water from entering or escaping the concrete. Internal membranes are created with waterproofing admixtures. External membranes are applied to the surface of the concrete

Preventing water penetration is the main function of waterproofing. By the use of the waterproof building, surfaces are made water-resistant. Bituminous materials, polyurethane liquid waterproofing membranes, and cementitious materials are the common waterproofing of buildings used in Nepal. Nowadays we can find waterproof paint also.

Various methods are used for waterproofing, such as admixtures, impregnation, film-forming membranes, surfacing, joint sealing, and grouting.

Admixtures: Mineral admixtures and Chemical admixtures are widely used for specific purposes. This helps to reduce the water content of the mix and makes the concrete dense, compact and durable.

Impregnation: For waterproofing of old and new structures, the impregnation type is used. In this method, the solution is penetrated into the pore structures considering three different actions such as hydrophobic, partial filling, and filling.

Film-forming membranes: This may be a liquid-applied waterproofing coating or a preformed elastomeric membrane.

Surfacing: For waterproofing, concrete, asphalt, concrete, epoxy mortar, polymer-polymer modified mortar, etc. are used as an over layer or cover over concrete.

Sealants: Joints are the necessary important parts of the structures as it acts as a link between parts of structures such as column-beam joint, column-slab joint, slab-slab joint, beam-beam joint, floor-floor joint, etc. all these shall be sealed with proper sealants.

Waterproofing Treatments

A building or structure needs waterproofing as the concrete itself will not be watertight on its own. All the flat roofs in the modern age are generally constructed of reinforced cement concrete.

This material removes all the problems of flat roofs except that the roof should be made waterproof by employing any of the various methods available for moisture-proofing.

Ideally, concrete, the most widely and regularly used construction material, is supposed to be watertight. A well-made concrete with proper mix design and with proper pouring and curing practices is regarded as a very low porous material.

The concrete loses its permeability due to the following reasons:

  • Improper gradation of materials,

  • Excessive water-cement ratio,

  • Less compaction,

  • Awkward architectural section,

  • Improper shuttering,

  • Cold joints shuttering either in mass concreting or in tall vertical structures,

  • Use of bad quality construction materials such as corrosive reinforcement or reactive aggregates,

  • Lack of curing: timely curing especially in high cement content concrete mix or where high-grade cement is used in plastering,

  • Damage to structures due to earthquake effects,

  • Failure of plumbing,

Waterproofing Methods

 Traditional Waterproofing Methods are:

  •  Lime Concrete Terracing,

  • Mud Phuska Terracing,

  • Terracing With Brick Bat Coba,

  • Waterproofing with Bitumen Felt,

New/Modern Methods for waterproofing:

  • Polymerized Bitumen

  • Waterproofing by APP (Atactic Polypropylene Polymeric)

  • Membrane Waterproofing By Crystallization (Cement and Liquid Polymer)

  • Fiber Reinforced Elastomeric liquid Waterproofing membrane.

  •  Swellable Type water stop tape.

  •  Waterproofing by nanotechnology

Waterproofing solutions for your home,

Polyurethane is considered one of the best home waterproofing materials in Nepal and the overall world. We can apply it seamlessly and penetrate the surface tightly and evenly. It will fill the finest cracks in concrete, reducing its water absorbency capacity. Coating, membrane, Dr. Fixit, Sika, Pidilite, mortar, Schluter Kerdi, laticrete, Bituthene, etc are the best waterproofing materials.

Here is the list of major preventive home waterproofing means,

  •  Your wooden Furniture should be always cleaned with a Dry cloth,

  • Rugs and carpets should be stored away,

  • Mosquitos and pests should be prevented,

  • Treat damp walls regularly,

  • Detect water leakage, and seepage or solve it,

  • Fix the leak and seal with cracksil,
